Princess Peigh (Melissa Leigh) and her Squire (Zach Alexander) have created a solid show for children 4 – 7 years old. Leigh and Alexander bring us to fantastic kingdom where many things happen in rapid succession and very little goes right. There is nothing here that is very deep, but Leigh is able enough as a performer to quickly move from one scene to another and convince a young audience that it is all part of a single story. A combination of puppets, magic, sword fight training, saving the kingdom, pratfalls, and audience participation allow the very young to maintain their interests for the length of the 35–45-minute show by continuously changing their focus.

If the show was any longer than it is, it would have trouble holding the attention of its target audience. It isn’t sophisticated enough to work in a 60–90-minute format. That length show requires great writing and a story that maintains some tension for this young of an audience. The isn’t what Princess Peigh provides. The show is perfect for a preschool to 2nd grade audience of 25-35 in an institutional or multi-entertainment setting (i.e. a birthday party). It will have trouble finding its legs on a presidium stage as a standalone event. It might work as part of a short play children’s festival paired with 2 or 3 other short shows on a program.

MITF was the probably the wrong place for this show, but that does not mean it is a bad show, just one that needs a very specific very young audience excited to be entertained and involved.
