Bill Eisenring on ATA’s “Henry V”

REVIEW of Henry V at American Theater of Actors directed by James Jennings, Starring Sam Hardy:

This production of Henry V has the advantage of having James Jennings, who has tremendous understanding of the Bard’s purpose and language as Director. It is also blessed with Sam Hardy giving the audience a fantastic title character. Also very strong were the four major supporting actors.

The production itself is bare bones which is almost always fine when you have work with extraordinary language. It works well here.

What is not as strong is the twelve actors supporting the first five. Not a great surprise in an off-off Broadway show. Many rushed through their parts which is usually a sign of discomfort with the language or memory, but it makes it almost impossible to achieve the comic and dramatic nuances necessary when doing Shakespeare.

If you want to see production of Henry V that is loyal to Shakespeare’s writing (always a good idea) see this show. If you need an evenly acted production which draws you in at every moment. you’ll be disappointed.
