David Laros: The Music of Life and the Macabre

David Laros, a Providence, Rhode Island-based musical theater artist, lives and breathes music. He describes his world in melodic terms, hearing harmonies in everything he sees. This deep connection to sound fuels his creative process, making the piano an indispensable part of his daily life. Even while traveling, his partner and collaborator, Erica Elsa Laros, ensures he has access to an instrument. Back home, his studio becomes a nocturnal haven where ideas are born, first tapped out on an old typewriter before being translated into musical form. During the day, Laros shares his expertise by mentoring musical theater performers virtually and serving as music director for various productions and cabarets.

Laros’s dedication to music is evident in his prolific artistic journey, which began over a decade ago when he and Erica met. Their creative partnership has blossomed, with “My Ghosts,” their current project, being just the first of many collaborations. For this particular musical, Laros found inspiration flowing effortlessly from Erica’s script. He notes that much of his artistic fuel comes from literature and gothic lore, making the macabre themes of “My Ghosts” a natural fit.

The darker side of art and storytelling holds a particular fascination for Laros. He cites a diverse range of influences, from the theatrical horror of Vincent Price and the chilling atmosphere of silent horror films to the musical genius of David Bowie and Stephen Sondheim. The silent film serial “Les Vampires” also holds a special place in their creative hearts. These influences intertwine to create a unique artistic sensibility that permeates Laros’s work.

“My Ghosts,” currently in development at LitArts RI with a special showing planned for New York, is more than just a theatrical piece for the Laroses. It’s a passion project with a deeper purpose. They aim to illuminate the life of the musical’s author and explore the universal struggle with the inner critic. The play delves into the often-harsh dialogue we have with ourselves, bringing these internal struggles to the forefront. David and Erica harbor ambitious goals for “My Ghosts,” hoping to bring their production to New York City and stages abroad, sharing their unique blend of music, storytelling, and introspection with a wider audience. David Laros’s dedication to his craft, combined with his fascination with the macabre and his commitment to exploring the human condition, positions him as a compelling and innovative force in the world of musical theater.
