Mark Solomon: From Philadelphia to Hollywood, Editing Animated Blockbusters

Mark Solomon’s journey to becoming a top film editor is a testament to the power of passion, adaptability, and a commitment to giving back.  Born and raised in Philadelphia, Solomon’s upbringing – with a comedian father and a mother from a military background – instilled in him a deep understanding of navigating differences and the power of storytelling.  This foundation led him to the theater, where he began exploring his creative voice as a performer and writer.

Solomon’s fascination with storytelling eventually drew him to the world of film.  Recognizing the broader reach of cinema and its potential to support his creative endeavors, he transitioned into editing.  He found a natural fit in the discipline of shaping narratives, preferring the tangible reality of working with existing footage to the often ephemeral nature of developing projects from scratch.

His career trajectory took an interesting turn with the rise of animated features. While his initial goal was simply to work with the best people on the best projects, Solomon’s willingness to embrace new technologies and his talent for visual storytelling led him to a string of successful animated films, including Space JamChicken RunShrek, and Frankenweenie.  He recognized the burgeoning animation industry as an opportunity, and his work on these films solidified his reputation as a sought-after editor in the genre.  Solomon’s choices weren’t just about career advancement; he understood the lasting impact of family-friendly entertainment and the power of these films to ignite young imaginations. He acknowledges the privilege of working on projects beloved by audiences worldwide.

Beyond his impressive filmography, Solomon is driven by a desire to mentor and support aspiring filmmakers.  Early in his career, he benefited from the generosity of established filmmakers who offered guidance and encouragement.  He promised himself to pay it forward, and his book, “Over the Shoulder,” is a fulfillment of that promise, sharing his insights and experiences with the next generation.

Solomon’s inspiration for entering the film industry stemmed from a single cinematic experience: seeing Harold and Maude.  The film’s life-affirming message resonated deeply, solidifying his conviction to dedicate his life to the art of visual storytelling.  This passion, coupled with his adaptability and commitment to mentorship, has defined his career.

Looking forward, Solomon continues to explore diverse creative avenues.  He is currently involved in producing a documentary about a climate circus project for middle schoolers and a dance project based on the story of a marriage. He also plans to expand on the ideas presented in “Over the Shoulder” with another book.  Mark Solomon’s journey is a reminder that a blend of artistic vision, practical skills, and a commitment to community can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career in the world of film.
