This past week, we’ve seen the beginning of a thrilling run of Shakespeare’s Macbeth on The Cullum Stage at the American Theatre of Actors! Under the direction of Ken Coughlin, this enthralling production will be running now through August 11th. The dynamic duo of Michael Finn and Sophia Carlin, starring as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, delivered a spellbinding performance on their opening night, Wednesday, July 24th. Last week, we had the pleasure of speaking with Sophia Carlin, a prolific young actress who has been making waves in the theatre scene since their graduation from Pace University in 2020. Sophia is a multifaceted talent, having played a range of classical roles, including Helena and Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet. Now, they are excited to reinvent the iconic role of Lady Macbeth, bringing a fresh perspective to this timeless character because as we all know, the ladies’ perspective is better, and who runs the world? Ladies!

In addition to her powerful stage presence, Sophia is also a dedicated freelance teaching artist with a wealth of experience working with kids. We’re excited to delve into their journey, their role as Lady Macbeth, and how they balance their passion for acting with their commitment to teaching. Let’s dive in!
Congratulations on your opening night!
How do you feel about your performance?
–> I feel good! I did the work, put it all out there, and hopefully folks liked what I brought to Lady Mackers. Always a pleasure to be back on stage again. Really happy to be here.
What was the preparation for this production like?
–> I really looked to the text for guidance, as any actor does, rather than looking for outward inspiration for Lady Mackers. I tried to bring as much humanity to the role as possible because I think it’s really easy to look at her as a symbol or lean into her theatricality. She has to be charming, likeable, and real enough to not only convince Macbeth, but for the audience to follow along with her.
I know you’ve performed in some Shakespeare plays before – what do you like about playing these classical roles?
–> I love the play that Shakespeare encourages. This text is 400+ years old and craves to be reinvented every time someone says these words. To be able to take on the challenge and infuse my own perspective into these timeless characters is always a great joy for me.
How has your experience at ATA been so far?
–> Great! Have already met and made some amazing pals through this show.
Is there anything else you want to share with us about your experience in Macbeth at ATA?
–> I’m absolutely honored to be trusted with Lady Macbeth. Looking forward to all that is to come!
Thank you!
