Playwright Nick Payne brings the Multiverse to the American Theatre of Actors
A love relationship holds untold possibilities -- especially if it's in a multiverse with CONSTELLATIONS, a new play by Nick Payne, running July 20 -- 28 at the American Theatre of Actors, 314 West 54th Street, New York City TICKETS
Nick Payne's dramedy explores the multiverse of possibilities of a relationship, raising profound questions about the difference between choice and destiny by exploring scenarios ranging from the hypothetical to the fantastical. As the characters navigate the twists and turns of their connection, audiences will be drawn into the play's innovative narrative and its take on the human condition. Where else but at one of New York's last original experimental theatres do you get a chance to experience an extraordinary play that delves into the depths of love, choice ... and the cosmos.
This two-hander features Derrien Kellum (Roxie in Chicago) plays Marianne and Alex Benjamin boasts training from Lee Strasberg's son John and a degree from Stella Adler Studio of Acting. Alex Benjamin is an actor and producer before ascending the stage, he worked as a paramedic in Montreal. He went from one world to another. Derrien Kellum, on the other hand, has always been a performer: "I’ve always been a “performer”, that’s my word; I found musical theater in Houston with a collective of people I do consider artists. They showed me the ropes in a lot of ways. And then I moved to New York with my partner in 2017, studied at Stella Adler through a global pandemic, and here we are!"
Nick Payne, the playwright, informed us that ‘Constellations’ was inspired by the idea of exploring multiple realities and the concept of parallel universes. The Play creates a narrative that delves into the possibilities of love and choice, examining how different decisions could lead to different outcomes. The play’s structure allows the characters to navigate these alternate realities, providing a unique and thought-provoking experience for the audience."
WE spoke to these artists about their voyage.
What is your creative process?
Alex Benjamin: My creative process involves really diving into the character’s mind and using method acting techniques to fully embody the role. I spend a lot of time getting to know the character’s motivations, background, and relationships, which helps me deliver a performance that feels authentic and nuanced.
Derrien Kellum: I mean the text is always first. Letting the text steer, and then the director steers, and then you find your own little curves and curls on the road. Does that make sense? Are we asleep? Did
Who are your inspirations?
Alex Benjamin: I’m inspired by pioneers like Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler, whose dedication and innovative techniques deeply influence my approach to acting. Actors such as Laurence Olivier, Daniel Day-Lewis, and contemporary stars like Mark Rylance inspire me with their ability to infuse roles with depth and authenticity. Additionally, John Cassavetes’ groundbreaking contributions to independent film have been a significant influence. Their collective work continuously motivates me to strive for excellence in my own performances.
Derrien Kellum: Couples Therapy, Emma Stone, Annaleigh Ashford always, in everything.
What do you hope the audience takes away from this show?
Alex Benjamin: I hope the audience walks away from ‘Constellations’ with a greater appreciation for the complexities of our relationships and the countless possibilities life holds. I want the play’s exploration of choice and destiny to provoke thought and inspire people to reflect on their own lives and connections.
Derrien Kellum: I think a big take away is not letting the small things distract you from what’s important. And that’s love, at the end of the day. Love, connection, not overthinking those things. That is what the play is helping me to learn.
What’s next?
Alex Benjamin: After ‘Constellations,’ I’m excited to take on new and challenging roles that push me as an actor. I’m also passionate about producing projects that tell compelling stories and resonate with audiences. Additionally, I’m eager to grow our production company, Post No Bills Productions, to bring more innovative theater works to the stage.
Derrien Kellum: I’m stoked to see what comes next and where this team decides to go! I’m very interested in continuing to produce and eventually start directing.
