‘MY MAMMA: The Superaction Hero’ is halfway through its run at American Theatre of Actors and it is taking audiences by storm! Kenthedo Robinson’s new play premiered on the John Cullum stage at ATA on Thursday, May 2nd and within a week has received indisputable praise. Tickets are still available for this limited-time run now through Mother’s Day! (Sunday, May 12) Tickets can be purchased here.

Kenthedo Robinson is known for the depth of his works, especially relating to the human experience, age, and aspirations. ATA President James Jennings tells us “Kenthedo writes thoughtfully from the African American perspective; about the pain of young men and women who need to be heard from.” ‘My Mamma: The Superaction Hero’ is no different.
Upon returning home to Smoky Hills Kansas, filmmaker Jerome Benjamin faces a dilemma. His 75-year-old mother is demanding to be a part of his new film. Not just any part; she wants to be the super-action hero of the film!
Despite the growing resentment, Mamma B proceeds to play out a series of stunts in an attempt to prove she is capable of the role despite her age, arthritis, or lack of conventional beauty. Mamma B even goes as far as to risk her son’s life to prove that she can save it!
Robinson says he pulled inspiration from his own mother, as well as from iconic female leads of the 50’s and 60’s. He tells us that this show “has a big heart that beats for every man and woman who has a dream”
And his cast agrees! Sharell Williams, playing Lourita, says this is a “fun story rooted in hope, bravery, passion, identity, and love.” Leesandra Moore, Sharell’s understudy, is equally impressed by the script. “The story was intriguing and has some twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting,” she says, “[I knew] the audience would be drawn into the storyline as I was.”
Alton Ray, portraying Jerome Benjamin in ‘My Mamma’ is another fan of Robinson’s work. This is Alton’s third production with writer Kenthedo Robinson, and he continues to be impressed. “He has been a mentor and great example of how to persevere in this business of entertainment.”
The cast of this show are each other’s biggest supporters at times. In fact, Leesandra doubles as the stage manager of the show, giving her a unique perspective working onstage and backstage. “Everyone has been a pleasure and i am honored to work with such wonderful people,” she says. Alton also commented, “My cast mates mean so much to me. They are extremely talented, supportive and always willing to explore the layers underneath.”
Of his role, Alton says the character of Jerome means a lot to him. “Often our dreams pull us away from those we love and that can leave room for guilt of feeling like one has to ‘make it.’” However, as Alton reminds us, you can never plan your future. ‘My Mamma: The Superaction Hero’ paints a vivid and touching story of a man and his mother grappling with that reality.
This show has been brought to life in a haven for creatives at the American Theatre of Actors. These professionals are dedicated to uplifting artists and delivering compelling art to audiences. The variety of talent in this cast is sure to amaze so don’t miss this fantastic production!
